Lava Like, Digital Collage Video, by Victoria Hamilton and Participant Thirty Three, 2023-25
Transcript
I came around from the eye surgery and I could see waves of colour: blue and red. I said, ‘I think they’ve saved some of my sight! I can see colours!!
It’s like a lava lamp – they bubble up and they plop down. Their forms are fluidly shifting in perpetual motion, the colours evolving: it’s really nice.
They started to form the kaleidoscope of patterns and shapes, with the characters appearing within that kaleidoscope.
There were snarling dogs from the Ghostbusters movie, they’ve got big teeth and horns and snarly red eyes.
And a tiger as well! The tiger looks so real you could see the lines on the fur and teeth with the jaw that was open.
Sometimes it can be with three layers. I also get cartoon characters. My son’s favourite teddy was Winnie the Pooh. If I’m happy and playing and laughing Winnie the Pooh will make an appearance. I do believe that that’s a connection with him – why that appears. And Danger Mouse? That was my favourite cartoon as a child. I get a lot of The Simpsons as well; I don’t know why.
A video of a CBS vision visualisation of a kaleidoscope of snarling dogs. They are reminisent of the terror dogs from the Ghostbusters movie: Zuul the Gatekeeper and Vinz Clortho the Keymaster, who are horned hellhounds. These creatures have large teeth, horns, and fierce red eyes.A video of a CBS vision visualisation of a kaleidoscope of tigers floating in space. Audio Description of Tiger Kaleidoscope Video Still
A video of a CBS vision visualisation of a kaleidoscope featuring characters reminiscent of participant Thirty Three son’s favourite teddy bear. This makes an appearance when they are happy, laughing, and connected with him. Also within the vision is their favourite cartoon from childhood, Danger Mouse. Interestingly, they often see a lot of The SImpsons, although unsure of the reason why.

Tiger Kaleidoscope Tactile 3D sculpture designed to be picked up, touched and felt. If you can not see the images and also can not hear the audio descriptions a Tactile sculpture helps to bring the visions to life.
A video of a CBS vision visualisation of different shapes of colour akin to a lava lamp. Blobs effervesce and descend like liquid wax, their forms fluidly shifting in perpetual motion. Hues of fiery reds and tranquil blues blend, the colours evolving—now dappled with yellow, now tinged by green.

Hi Victoria this sounds great from the description. I can’t actually see what it looks like but it is described like one of my hallucinations.
Hi Nina,
thank you. I think it is a work in progress. Looking at your art work on the Windows of the Soul webpage – you have colour bubbles floating with a grey-black background. In the video I created the background has a black oval that fades out to grey at the edges then is surrounded by a dull light grey – almost white.
I will be attempting your kaleidoscope visions in the future … getting there, but it is a slow process.
Hope all is good with you,
Cheers,
Vicky
